Moab, Utah - 2007 Day 4 - Hell's Revenge : 2007-04-12

Day 4 - Today we took on Hell’s Revenge. This is a long trail, especially when you take a wrong turn. While not the hardest trail we took during the week, a lot of the trail is very high up offering great views and spooky off camber over a 700-foot drop routes. We were most amazed at the lack of people that we saw. Until the end, we saw only bikers, dirt bikes and a couple of vehicles.

The trip to the overlook was pretty uneventful. We just tried to follow the marking (which we still took a wrong turn) and checked out things like the hot tubs. At the outlook we were not able to drive up to the top due to a Jeep (trail plug!) with broken a axle. But the view of the Colorado River was pretty spectacular none the same.

On the way back, we backtracked to the hot tubs where we were looking for the place we might have taken the wrong route. While there we ran into a group of about 15 Jeeps, very nice guys, who decided that they were going to play in the tubs a little bit. After one guy bit the bullet and drove through, everyone saw that the water wasn’t very deep so several more people drove through it including Butch. After that we decided to follow this group who looked like they might actually know the way out.

The last real obstacle we hit was Tip Over Challenge. When we arrived, a lady in a rental Jeep was making her way up until she took a bad line and came about one foot from rolling on down (there were some comments about lady drivers, but honestly, she was guided up a really bad line). Her husband was there guiding her through and at that point just had her back down and take the bypass. After that the Jeeps we were following all drove up with the help of one very good spotter in their group . Somehow one of the Jeeps managed to break a shock near the top, but keep going and parked it for repairs. I wasn’t really feeling like going up, but with everyone up there watching…hey, what can I say, get a big enough crowd and I’ll probably do anything! It was actually really easy with a good spotter and I drove right on up.

Overall, a pretty uneventful day, but I would highly recommend this trail to anyone looking for nice views and a little challenge.

On to Day 5
